Loss

Loss is a measure of the discrepancy between the model’s predictions and the correct labels. It helps the model adjust its weights to reduce error and gradually improve accuracy over time. Loss functions are usually expressed mathematically as a cost function, or an objective function that needs to be minimized by tweaking parameters to give better predictions. Common loss functions used in deep learning include mean squared error (MSE) and cross-entropy loss. The choice of which loss function to use depends on the type of task and problem being solved, as each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, loss is a key component in deep learning, helping models learn effectively from data so they can produce accurate results when presented with new inputs.

MSE loss, also known as quadratic loss, is a popular loss function for regression problems. It’s calculated by taking the average of all squared differences between the model’s predictions and the correct labels. Essentially, it measures how close the predicted outputs are to their true values on average. It takes small errors into account more than larger errors, making it an effective choice for regression tasks where accuracy is important. However, its focus on smaller errors can sometimes lead to underfitting and slow learning if not used correctly.

Cross-entropy loss (also known as logarithmic loss) is commonly used for classification tasks such as image recognition or natural language processing (NLP). Unlike MSE which works on a continuous scale, it works on a discrete scale and uses the probability of predicted outputs to measure the error. It’s calculated by taking the negative logarithm of the model’s predicted probability for each class, then averaging over all classes. This loss function rewards models that give higher probabilities to correct labels while penalizing them for incorrect predictions. It generally leads to faster learning than MSE but is more sensitive to label noise, so its results can vary depending on how clean the data is.
