AI Leader Strengthens Local Support for Regional Systems Integrators with Industry-Leading CS-1 System

TOKYO and LOS ALTOS – August 6, 2020 – Cerebras Systems, the pioneer in accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) compute, today announced its international expansion in Japan with the opening of Cerebras Systems G.K.. In addition to announcing the opening of Cerebras Systems G.K., which is a wholly owned subsidiary located in Tokyo, Cerebras also announced the appointment of Hiromasa Ebi as Country Manager of Cerebras Systems G.K. Based in Tokyo, Ebi is an industry veteran and brings more than 30 years of experience in IT, with a focus on data management infrastructure.

“Japan is an enormously important market for Cerebras, and we have been collaborating with customers and partners, such as Tokyo Electron Devices, in Japan since 2016,” said Andrew Feldman, CEO and Co-Founder of Cerebras. “We are proud and excited to add Ebi to our team. Ebi brings leadership, technical expertise, and local market knowledge to help Cerebras to serve the Japanese market in the best way possible. Under Ebi’s leadership we look forward to helping drive AI innovation across the Japanese market.”

“I am honored to join the Cerebras team and bring world-class AI compute to industries and companies across Japan,” said Ebi. “The Cerebras CS-1 is one of the fastest AI computers in existence.  I look forward to helping bring this pioneering technology to the Japanese market and to solving some of the largest AI problems in Japan.”

Ebi comes to Cerebras Systems with a respected track record for establishing Japan entities for global companies from the ground up. He previously served as CEO of Cohesity Japan KK, a joint venture with Softbank, where he launched the company’s business operations in Japan. Prior to that, Ebi held various leadership positions at Japanese entities, including Vice President and General Manager of Scality Japan K.K.; Country Manager of Fusion-io K.K.; Vice President and General Manager of Isilon Systems K.K.; and Director of Alliance Partnerships, NetApp K.K.

In November 2019, Cerebras announced Cerebras CS-1, the industry’s fastest AI computer, which was recently selected as one of Fast Company’s Best World Changing Ideas and a winner of IEEE Spectrum’s Emerging Technology Awards. Cerebras also recently announced CS-1 deployments at some of the largest computer facilities in the U.S., including  Argonne National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) for its groundbreaking Neocortex AI supercomputer.

Cerebras’ flagship product, the CS-1, is powered by Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine (WSE), which is the industry’s first and only wafer scale processor. The WSE contains 400,000 AI optimized compute cores, more than one trillion transistors and measures 46,225 millimeters square. The CS-1 system is also comprised of the CS-1 enclosure, which is a complete computer system and delivers power, cooling and data to the WSE; and the Cerebras software platform, which makes the solution quick to deploy and easy to use. These technologies combine to make the CS-1 the highest performing AI accelerator ever built, allowing AI researchers to use their existing software models without modification.

“We are very pleased with the establishment of the Japanese subsidiary of Cerebras Systems and the appointment of Mr. Hiromasa Ebi as Country Manager,” said Yoshinao Jozen, Vice President of CN Business Unit, Tokyo Electron Device. “As the digital transformation accelerates the demand for AI, the ultra-fast CS-1 system can dramatically reduce training time for deep learning models.”

About Cerebras Systems

Cerebras Systems is a team of pioneering computer architects, computer scientists, deep learning researchers, and engineers of all types. We have come together to build a new class of computer to accelerate artificial intelligence work by three orders of magnitude beyond the current state of the art. The Cerebras CS-1 is the fastest AI computer in existence. It contains a collection of industry firsts, including the Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine (WSE). The WSE is the largest chip ever built. It contains 1.2 trillion transistors, covers more than 46,225 square millimeters of silicon and contains 400,000 AI optimized compute cores. The largest graphics processor on the market has 54 billion transistors and covers 826 square millimeters and has only 6,912 cores. In artificial intelligence work, large chips process information more quickly producing answers in less time. As a result, neural networks that in the past took months to train, can now train in minutes on the Cerebras WSE.
